Charles Esten Reveals How He Wants Nashville To End

Charles Esten knows the beauty of Nashville.

In a new interview with USA Today, the star of CMT’s country music drama reveals he has written a song to appear in the show’s final season, and it’ll be one of the final songs his character, Deacon Claybourne, sings.

“At some point it'll be the last song Deacon sings on the show. But the way I like to think about it is this isn’t the end of that world,” he says. “This is the end of us watching it.”

The song, entitled “Looking for the Light,” was written with Deacon’s past in mind. It’s a process Charles has found to be a lot easier.

“In many ways, I don't have to try to get in Deacon’s head, because his head is my head,” the actor says. “In a real way, we share a mind...and I’ve walked in his boots now for almost six years.”

And that's just how he hopes Nashville comes to a close--with new blood stomping up in cowboy boots.

“I picture somebody [new] pulling up in the final shot,” Charles adds. “Somebody’s coming to town the minute somebody’s leaving. That’s how it is [in Nashville], and that’s the beauty of it.”

Look for Charlie to perform "Looking for the Light" on episode five. Nashville airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CMT.
