Why Kelly Clarkson Chose The Voice Over American Idol

Timing is everything for Kelly Clarkson.

The original American Idol winner tells Entertainment Weekly why she decided against returning to her old stomping grounds as a judge for its upcoming ABC reboot, instead opting to serve as a coach on Season 14 on NBC’s The Voice.

“It’s a little too soon,” Kelly says of ABC’s revival of Idol, “because I was pregnant with my son when it ended, and he’s only 1.”

Plus, coaching The Voice means more time with her husband Brandon Blackstock, who manages longtime country coach Blake Shelton.

“I want it to be a great experience for my whole family, and that’s what I have to think about at this point in my life,” she adds. “We’re used to the Voice schedule, we already have to work around it because of our family. We have four children — that can be very taxing with a schedule. It was just a no-brainer for me with The Voice because of that alone.”

Going on to say she hopes the American Idol is “super successful,” the “Love So Soft” singer expresses her goal on The Voice is to produce an artist who will “have a successful career after being on the show.”
