Carly Pearce Reveals Her Playlist

Carly Pearce sat down with Cody Alan to reveal the musical plot twist that came in the form of her current single, "Next Girl," and namechecks the big names inspiring her these days.

Spoiler alert - it's not just country artists.

"I had the idea for "Next Girl" actually listening to it in true Carly Pearce fashion as a letter to the next girl and making it sad," says Carly. "But, what's so amazing about working with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne is their ability to take an idea and completely make it feel like a hit."

"We all love ladies of country," shared the country star. "We were talking about Patty Loveless and all of those anthems that she had. Faith had all of those anthems, and Martina and Sara Evans, and Lee Anne Womack. It just kind of spilled out. It was a really quick write and one of my first writes with them, and we did it on zoom! Hashtag 2020 Writing."

"I feel like 'Continuum,' the John Mayer album, has taken on a whole new meaning for me, which I really love," says the "Next Girl" singer. "I feel like he probably was in a transitional period in his life when he wrote that album."

"I think because of having this newfound resurgence of my musical roots, I have gone back and have been obsessing over Lee Anne Womack, and The Chicks, and Sara Evans, and Patty Loveless, and Alison Krauss and Union Station," continues the singer. "Just kind of listening to that music and getting reacquainted with the music that made me want to do this for a living."

"29 was such a big year in my professional life, with the loss of Busbee, my producer, to brain cancer. Also, just a lot of changes in my personal life," says Carly.

"I think at this point in your life, sometimes things end up the way you thought they would, and sometimes they don't end up the way that you thought they would," Carly continued. "I hope that when people listen to this music, if you are going through any kind of struggle, it will give you hope and redemption on the other side."
