Songland returned with another episode on Monday night (May 18) and Florida Georgia Line served as special guests for this week's installment to help contestant Griffen Palmer tweak his song, "Second Guessing." Additionally, the pair made an appearance on the counterpart Songland Podcast and shared some insight on their songwriting dynamic, as well as their thoughts on the winning champ's love song.
Before breaking down their experience working on "Second Guessing," Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley spoke about venturing into the songwriting realm with one another. "It's been amazing, as songwriters and artists together doing this together, having my best friend, my brother, we're not doing it alone," Kelley reflected during the podcast. "I think we're better together. We're stronger. And our favorite quote we've heard is 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.' I think we push each other creatively. It just works."
Meanwhile, Hubbard gushed about falling for the concept of Songland since it simply showcases the songs and accompanying writers. "Me and BK moved moved to Nashville to be songwriters," he told listeners, confessing that it was their initial game plan before they turned to being full-blown artists. "Ultimately, we're song writers at heart. That's our number one passion. So to showcase to the world that not all artists write their own music and there actually is a career called songwriting. There actually is a lot of importance put on the song. We say without a great song, there's no foundation for anything. The song comes first before anything else. I think this show really does a great job of doing that."
As for "Second Guessing," which Palmer wrote, alongside Jeff Warburton and Benson Minetti, the song came to life when he was a college graduate at the ripe age of 22. "The first batch of my friends were getting married," he explained during the episode, admitting that they were the people that had high school sweethearts throughout college. "Some of these weddings were far away on the other side of the country. I couldn't make it to some of these weddings. I wanted to have something I could at least send them, some sort of love song I can send them and say, 'You know what, thanks for inviting me, but I can't be there. I hope you like this.'"
Much to his surprise, Palmer's performance of the track on the NBC competition caught him off guard since the panel, including Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean and Shane McAnally offered him smiles once he was done. "Out of all the songs we've heard on this show, from the beginning, from both seasons, I've never been mad at a hook," McAnally gushed. "That is out of this world. How has that not been written?"
